A pair of Gulf Coast restauranteurs are seeking approval to build a 14-townhome development at the corner of Spring and Intendencia Streets in downtown Pensacola.

Rimmer Covington and Ron Ladner are partners in Shaggy’s Restaurants, a small chain with three locations in Mississippi and one on Pensacola Beach. They’ve also teamed up for the Aguada Creek development, proposed for a 0.71-acre parcel at 111 South Spring Street. Covington and Ladner acquired the properties for about $534,000 in two transactions last year.

The project would include 14 townhomes clustered into three buildings on the site, two of which would front Spring and Intendencia Streets. Each three-story townhome would include a garage — accessed from the interior, not the street — as well as a rooftop terrace. The two and three-bedroom units would range from 1,500 to 2,025 square feet.

Aguada, which means “watery” in Spanish, is one of several names for a creek — also called Washerwoman’s Creek and San Gabriel Creek — which once flowed through the western part of what’s now downtown Pensacola, emptying into Pensacola Bay near the modern-day Community Maritime Park.

Townhome developments have been on the rise in downtown Pensacola in recent years. Projects currently planned in the downtown area include The Warfield, Girard Place, Covington Place, and Hallmark Townhomes.

City council members approved the plat for the Aguada Creek development in December. Since the project site is located within one of five of Pensacola’s review districts, developers are now seeking approval from the city’s Architectural Review Board, which will take up the matter at its February 15 meeting.
