Freshman Northwest Florida congressman Matt Gaetz joined five other House Republicans in front of the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday to renew his call for an investigation into the FBI’s handling of its probe last year into former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails.
Gaetz was joined by Reps. Jim Jordan (OH-04), Mark Meadows (NC-11), Scott Perry (PA-04), Jody Hice (GA-10), and Andy Biggs (AZ-05).
“I’m proud to be joined by my fellow conservatives in the House to call for an investigation into the FBI’s procedures that allowed Hillary Clinton to receive special treatment,” Gaetz said at the press conference.
As special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential contact between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russian government has intensified, some conservatives in Congress have sought to revisit last year’s FBI probe into Clinton’s emails, which was described in one recently-released document as “special.” At least one former FBI supervisor, however, has said that the term “special” is used interchangeably within the Bureau to mean “major case.”
Gaetz and Biggs, along with Texas congressman Louie Gohmert, sent a letter last week to FBI Director Christopher Wray demanding answers to various questions related to the Clinton investigation ahead of Wray’s scheduled testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
“We also remain troubled regarding the FBI’s treatment of President Trump both before and after his election,” the congressmen wrote.
“The law demands equal treatment for all, not ‘special’ treatment for some,” Rep. Gaetz said in a statement released following the press conference. “There is a clear and consistent pattern of treating the Clinton investigation differently than other investigations. At least some of this ‘special’ treatment seems to have been motivated by political bias. As America’s premier law enforcement agency, the FBI must rise above the fray of partisanship. Our judicial system depends on equal treatment under the law.”
