Dirty water issue plagues downtown Pensacola

An official alert has been issued by the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority in response to reports of discolored water by residents and businesses located in and around downtown Pensacola.

Late Tuesday evening, reports began coming into the ECUA that downtown residents and businesses were reporting dirty, brown discolored water coming through their taps. Multiple downtown restaurants and businesses were forced to turn away customers due to the water-quality issues.

ECUA crews flushed the lines for several hours late Tuesday and said they had cleared the problem and all hydrants were flowing clear. Officials asked residents and businesses located in the area to run the cold water tap for five to ten minutes to clear any residual discolored water in their location’s plumbing.

“No breaks have been discovered and there has been no loss of system pressure,” ECUA officials said.

But as more reports of discolored water came in, ECUA officials said Wednesday that response crews were on site downtown once again. Crews worked downtown throughout the day Wednesday, eventually identifying an issue in the vicinity of Global Grill. An ECUA spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon that there’s no timeline yet on when the issue will be fixed, but said that lab results for water samples are expected to come back Thursday morning.

4 p.m. UPDATE: ECUA officials said flushing activities are completed and lines are clear but crews are remaining in the area to address any isolated residual issues.  Engineers and field crews will continue investigations to determine the cause of the problem.

Thursday UPDATE: ECUA crews have completed the flushing and lines are clear but are remaining in the area to address any isolated residual issues.  Engineers and field crews will continue investigations to determine the cause problem.
