Santa Rosa County District 1 commissioner Jayer Williamson has resigned his office effective immediately in order to comply with Florida’s “resign to run” laws.

Williamson is a candidate for state representative, and because the terms of the two elected offices would overlap, state election law required him to resign his current office before the end of the qualifying period this Friday.

“When I found out that the only way to comply with the state statute would be an immediate resignation from the board, my heart sank.” said Williamson. “I was looking forward to serving these last four months and finishing the work we have started in District One. It truly has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve the citizens of Santa Rosa County.”

An electrical contractor and part owner of Williamson Electrical Company in Milton, Williamson has served as the county’s District 1 commissioner since April 2014, when Governor Rick Scott appointed him to serve out the remainder of his father Jim’s term on the commission. Williamson was reelected without opposition later that year.

Republicans Mark Cotton and Sam Parker and write-in Caleb Lee Boudreaux are running to replace Williamson on the commission.
