Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward’s office announced this afternoon that Keith Wilkins has been hired as the assistant city administrator. Wilkins is expected to start work at the end of November.

“Keith is the right person with the right temperament and the right talent-set to keep us moving forward,” Hayward said in announcing his selection.  “I have tremendous respect for the work Keith has done at the County and his long history of collaboration with the City on projects that have benefitted our entire area.  His experience and values match up very well with my team and I know that he will help us maintain our momentum as work starts on a number of major projects around the City.”

Wilkins, 58, currently serves as Escambia County’s Director of Community and Environment, earning an annual salary of $104,000. After Wilkins was announced earlier this month as one of three finalists for the position, it was widely speculated that he would be offered the job.

During his 16-year tenure with Escambia County, Wilkins has outlasted more than a half dozen county administrators and several organizational reshuffles. As Director of Community and Environment, Wilkins currently oversees between 50-60 employees and seven divisions, including Water Quality and Land Management, Natural Resources Conservation, Marine Resources, Mosquito Control, Housing and Community Development, Community Redevelopment Agency, and Extension Services. Notably, Wilkins serves as the County’s point person on the RESTORE process, coordinating more than $100 million in economic development, infrastructure, and ecological restoration projects.
